Apparatus for monitoring a parameter in a well

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7229792
A side pocket mandrel is described for receiving an electrically powered instrument for monitoring a parameter, such as pressure, temperature, or the like, at a subsurface location in a well, comprising: a. an elongate body having connection means at its upper and lower ends for attachment in a string of well tubing and having a flow passage therethrough alignable with the bore of the tubing; b. a receptacle bore in the body laterally offset from and extending alongside the flow passage, the lower end of the receptacle bore opening to the exterior of the body; c. an internal longitudinal keyway-like channel in the wall of the flow passage aligned with and extending upwardly from the upper end of the receptacle bore to a location near the connection means at the upper end of the body. The inward side of the channel is open to the flow passage, the upper end of the receptacle bore being accessible through the channel by tools lowered through the well tubing into the flow passage of the body; and d. an electrical contact assembly sealingly engaged in and closing the lower end of the receptacle bore and having an insulated conductor rod extending therethrough. The lower end of the insulated conductor rod is connectable to electrical conduction means extending to the surface, and the upper end of the conductor rod extends into the receptacle bore providing an electrical contact engageable by an electrical contact of an instrument lowered through the well tubing and installed in the body with its lower end received in the receptacle bore and its major portion housed in the channel above the receptacle bore, leaving the flow passage unobstructed.
