Method for sequentially co-processing heavy hydrocarbon and carbonaceous materials

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7229704
A method for sequentially co-processing a heavy hydrocarbon material and a carbonaceous material is described comprising the steps of: subjecting a heavy hydrocarbon material comprising a residuum resulting from the refining of crude oil and containing +850/sup 0/F and higher boiling fractions to predetermined conditions of temperature and pressure in the presence of at least one disposable metal catalyst selected from the group consisting of iron oxides and iron sulfides in an amount ranging from about 0.1 parts to about 10 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the +850/sup 0/F and higher boiling fractions in the heavy hydrocarbon material to effect conversion of the heavy hydrocarbon material to and recovery of a first distillate stream and a first non-distillable effluent stream containing the disposable metal catalyst; admixing the first non-distillable effluent stream containing the disposable metal catalyst with a carbonaceous material and at least one process-derived solvent selected from the group consisting of a process-derived distillate solvent and a process-derived deashed light resid solvent to provide a liquefaction slurry containing the disposable metal catalyst; subjecting the liquefaction slurry to predetermined conditions of temperature and pressure in the presence of hydrogen and the disposable metal catalyst; fractionating the liquefaction product stream at predetermined conditions of temperature and pressure; subjecting the second non-distillable effluent stream to critical solvent extraction at predetermined conditions of temperature and pressure with a solvent having a critical temperature below about 800/sup 0/F.
