Nuclear quadrupole resonance

The subject of nuclear quadrupole resonance is reviewed. Theoretical aspects are discussed first: electric quadrupole moment, electric field gradient, nuclear quadrupole resonance, and methods for measuring quadrupole coupling constants (pure quadrupole resonance, Zeeman effect, nuclear magnetic resonance, microwave spectrum, Moessbauer spectroscopy, other techniques). Factors affecting the resonance signal include static and dynamic influences on the line width and the position of the resonance signal. Instrumentation is briefly described. The correlation of nuclear quadrupole coupling constants with molecular structure is treated. Applications to halides (Group III, Group IV, transition metals, hexahalides in heavy atoms, etc.), nitrogen quadrupole resonance, minerals (chemical and structural properties, order--disorder phenomena), and quantitative analysis are examined. 6 figures, 7 tables, 77 references.
