Energy conservation and heat recovery in wastewater treatment plants

Journal Article · · Water Sewage Works; (United States)

Waste water treatment plants have many sources from which heat may be recovered and used for space heating. The operation and performance of the heat pump and the energy wheel systems for heat recovery and reuse at the Cleveland Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant are discussed. The heat pump augments the building space heating requirements by recovering heat from the waste water being treated. The energy wheel recovers heat from air being exhausted from the building ventilation system. The annual heating cost savings affected by using these two systems is calculated to be approximately $8,000 per heat pump unit and $7700 per energy wheel. (LCL)
