Extensive microwave and high-resolution infrared measurements have been made on the normal form of nitric acid (HNO[sub 3]) because it plays a significant role in the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere. However, spectroscopic studies on the less common isotopic forms of nitric acid have been quite limited. The infrared absorption spectrum of the [nu][sub 2] band of deuterated nitric aid (DNO[sub 3]) has been measured on a Bomem DA3.002 Fourier transform spectrometer in the wavenumber region 1,640--1,740 cm[sup [minus]1] with a resolution of 0.04 cm[sup [minus]1]; 2,036 transitions have been assigned in this hybrid type A and B band centered at 1,688.3269 [+-] 0.0002 cm[sup [minus]1]. The assigned transitions have been fitted to give nine rovibrational constants for the [nu][sub 2] = 1 state with a standard deviation of 0.00064 cm[sup [minus]1]. The ratio of the transition moments, [vert bar][mu][sub b]/[mu][sub a][vert bar], has been found to be 1.98 [+-] 0.10 for the band.
