The use of the finite element method in the field of fluid mechanics has received increased attention within the last decade. Recent work in the application of the method to problems of viscous, incompressible flow is reviewed. The analysis of coupled fluid/thermal problems is also discussed. Problem formulations, solution methods and examples of typical finite element calculations are presented. Areas of current and future research and development are described.
