Diagnosis of chronic and postoperative osteomyelitis with /sup 67/Ga citrate scans

Journal Article · · Am. J. Surg.; (United States)
The diagnosis of osteomyelitis is still established by a high index of suspicion and indirect clinical evidence. Because of its inaccuracy, such a diagnostic routine may delay therapy while the infection continues to destroy bone. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether postoperative osteomyelitis or the exacerbation of chronic osteomyelitis could be diagnosed by the intravenous injection of a gamma-emitting isotope. Gallium-67 citrate was selected and used in thirteen patients in whom the diagnosis of osteomyelitis had been made by other clinical means. Our results suggest that gallium-67 can be used to detect the early stages of acute exacerbations of chronic osteomyelitis and postoperative bone infections.
