Thirteen coal samples were collected. Fifty-eight characterized coal samples and their analytical data were provided to other agencies; and 41 additional sets of analytical data were supplied upon request. The Penn State/ERDA Coal Data Base has been expanded to process several new types of information, including trace element analyses, fusion temperatures of coal ash, and char reactivity data. Fractionation data show that reactive and inert coal components can be separated, yielding a vitrinite concentrate and a fusinite concentrate. Rapid heat treatment of chars increases nitrogen and carbon dioxide surface areas while decreasing char particle size. Char reactivity to steam increases when large amounts of inorganic elements are ion exchanged with the raw lignites and lignite chars. Carbon deposition in char structures resulting from the cracking of volatilized hydrocarbons can retard gasification. Pyrite, gypsum, kaolinite, and calcite inhibit the gasification of a microporous Saran char in carbon dioxide at 900/sup 0/C.
