Scanning techniques to assess thyroid nodules

Despite its nonspecificity, the thyroid scan remains an important diagnostic aid in the evaluation of the patient with a solitary thyroid nodule. Dual radionuclide thyroid imaging using /sup 99m/Tc pertechnetate and /sup 123/I offers more useful information than either alone. The role of complementary diagnostic modalities using ultrasonography and thermography looks promising but is as yet unclear.
