Abandonment of a subsea well

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7223735

In August 1975, Continental Oil Company abandoned a mudline completed subsea oil well that had been in a production status since April 1969 in 95 feet of water, offshore Louisiana. The system utilized a remotely operated and hydraulically controlled tree designed for completion and production operations with diver assistance. This paper will describe abandonment methods and procedures, drilling, completion and production operations and the technical analysis of the recovered tree. Single-well subsea system technology is available for development of shallow water reserves. However, this experience has shown the need for improvements in such areas as component repair and wellhead re-entry in order to minimize diver assistance. Today, with this type of system, diver assistance cannot be completely eliminated and must be considered in the initial design and planning of a subsea program.
