Motor market still slow for efficient units

Manufacturers of electric motors are increasing their efforts to produce more efficient motors in spite of the fact that demand is slow in developing. Although the distributor and end-user markets have indicated interest in more efficient equipment, the higher costs (as much as 25 percent) have been a deterrent. The original equipment market (fans, air conditioners, etc.) claim there is not sufficient demand for higher efficiency to justify the added cost. A proposal of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) to require that manufacturers of electric motors specify product efficiency and power factor should encourage both manufacturers and purchasers. A report by Arthur D. Little, Inc. recommends the NEMA proposal on the grounds that electric motors consume 64 percent of the electricity produced in the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency also backs the proposal. Manufacturers hope to overcome the high price barrier by emphasizing the payback aspects as electric rates increase. Plans and responses of several motor manufacturers are cited. (DCK)
