Criticality data for aqueous solutions of U235 and Pu239 and for flooded arrays of enriched uranium-aluminum alloy slugs were related to the simple one-group neutron diffusion model. Material bucklings were calculated on the basis of this model, and reflector savings were determined by equating the geometric bucklings to these material bucklings. Such reflector savings, which include deviations from the simple theory as well as the true extrapolation distances, vary slowly with the composition of the medium. By estimating the reflector savings that are appropriate to the onegroup treatment of a particular case, critical conditions can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. The nuclear safety of some Savannah River separations equipment was evaluated by this procedure.
