A process is described for converting a feedstock comprising alcohol, carbonyl, ether or mixtures therof to conversion product comprising hydrocarbon compounds. The process comprises contacting the feedstock at conversion conditions sufficient to convert the feedstock to the product with a catalyst composition. The composition is prepared by a method which comprises forming a composite of a crystalline zeolite having a silica:alumina mole ratio of at least 100:1 and a Constrint Index from 1 to 12, a binder comprising alumina, and water, and contacting the composite with steam to enhance the activity of the catalyst.
