The US Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the mining industry, has identified and demonstrated the effectiveness of several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include the following: identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face to maximize usage of the primary airflow, identifying optimum face headgate to minimize outby airflow contamination. Application of these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust. 9 refs., 11 figs.
