A method for identifying explosives, from post-detonation residue, by adding as a finely divided material or solution, a uniquely coded tagging mixture of rare earth compounds in predetermined ratios to each lot of explosive. The rare earths and ratios are determined from radiation-excited phosphors prepared from the post-detonation residue. This method is useful for post-manufacture tagging of explosives and may be used to tag other types of material where later identification is important.
