Dismembering the oil companies: higher costs, more imports, less efficiency, fewer jobs. [Booklet]

Book ·
OSTI ID:7220953
Proposals have been introduced in Congress to dismember the large integrated oil companies. Many of these proposals would require these companies to divest themselves of their assets and operations in all but one of the four basic functions of the industry: (1) searching for and producing oil and natural gas; (2) making products from oil; (3) transporting the raw materials and products; and (4) marketing the petroleum products. Companies that are engaged in all four of these functions are called ''integrated.'' Those performing more than one but fewer than all four are called ''partially integrated.'' Proponents of these proposals charge that the industry is monopolistic, not competitive and too big, and that it charges too much for its products. These are sweeping claims that deserve close analysis in the interest of the energy-consuming public. This booklet examines the charges being made against the industry by advocates of divestiture, in an effort to determine their validity and whether they provide an adequate basis for what is being proposed.
