Amplification and generation of stimulated radiation in a quartz fiber

An experimental investigation was made of the amplification of lambda=1.06 ..mu.. radiation in a 2500-mm long Nd/sup 3 +/-activated quartz fiber. Stimulated emission was observed when the pump energy was 180--200 J and it was accompanied by a weak spontaneous noise. When the threshold was exceeded by a factor of 2, the gain rose to 7 x 10/sup 4/.
