Methods of preventing or extinguishing spontaneous firing of coal and refuse banks are reviewed and experience in extinguishing extensive waste-bank fire at St. Nicholas anthracite colliery near Mahanoy City, Pa. is related. The history of fire, methods of combatting it, and accident record and physiological effects on those engaged in work are discussed. Detailed data are included on cost and employment to emphasize need for cheaper and more-effective methods of extinguishing such fires.
