Stark effect applicable to optically pumped far-infrared laser

Journal Article · · IEEE J. Quant. Electron.; (United States)
Increased absorption due to low electric field Stark tuning of FIR laser gas has been observed at the P(12) 9.4-..mu.. CO/sub 2/ laser line. This low electric field stark tuning indicates the possibility of increasing the pumping efficiency of the CH/sub 3/OH FIR laser at its normal optimal operating pressure. It also suggests that significant Stark field induced frequency modulation of the FIR laser output is possible. A FIR laser incorporating Stark electrodes is being constructed in our laboratory at this time and the effects of Stark fields upon FIR laser operation will be reported in the near future.
