Infrared studies of one-dimensional conductors of the cation-deficient type M/sub 1//sub .//sub 75/(Pt(CN)/sub 4/)1.5H/sub 2/O, where M=K, Rb, or Cs, are reported. Results are compared with those previously reported for the anion-deficient conductors as well as between the starting materials, unoxidized K/sub 2/(Pt/sup +2/(CN)/sub 4/)3H/sub 2/O and fully oxidized K/sub 2/(Pt/sup +4/(CN)/sub 4/Br/sub 2/). It is observed that some of the infrared-active vibrations are sensitive to the oxidation state of Pt. The trends are explained in terms of an increase in metal--CN ..pi..-back bonding, and a decrease in the metal--carbon sigma bonding. Spectral data are included for the organic guanidinium tetracyanoplatinate 1-D conductor.
