Offshore study gives pointers for selecting the correct platform

Journal Article · · Offshore; (United States)

A survey was made of offshore drilling platform structural designs. It is concluded that fixed steel structures are economically and technically feasible in 200 meter plus water depth in mild sea environments. Piled jackets can be barge launched or naturally buoyant, but construction costs clearly favor the first type in most locations. It is also concluded that the development of more accurate numerical simulations for launching and upending are necessary and that such simulations need to be calibrated against scale model test.
