Once trapped miners are located by the Communication/Location Subsystem of the Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System, it is the purpose of the Rescue Subsystem to complete a probe hole as soon as possible from the surface to their location through which their survival needs can be met until a rescue hole reaches them in a minimum of additional time, the report points out. The entire operation must be carried out without creating additional hazards for the men trapped underground. Two separate rotary type drilling rigs, along with their associated drilling equipment, were assembled to carry out the probe and the rescue drilling operations. Much of the equipment selected for assembly of the two drill rigs consisted of standard items available from drilling equipment manufacturers; however, special requirements of the Rescue Subsystem, such as the safety of trapped miners and helicopter or aircraft transport, made extensive special detail design and fabrication of equipment components necessary. The two drill rigs and the operating techniques represented commercial state of the art in the commercial drilling industry. (Author) (GRA)
