High water content micellar solution containing thickeners

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7215995
For improved oil recovery a viscosity-increasing agent was added to a water-external micellar solution, which contained petroleum sulfonate in the concentration of at least five times the CMC (critical micelle concentration). Berea cores (170 md permeability) were flooded with brine (20,000 ppm TDS), then with crude oil (7 cp at 23/sup 0/C), and finally waterflooded with the brine. The micellar solution followed by a mobility buffer recovered 93.7 percent oil. The micellar solution contained ammonium petroleum sulfonate (MW 300-525), salt, water, hydrocarbon, and Betz copolymers of acrylamide and acrylic acid. Betz polymers were dissolved in water (400 ppm TDS) for the mobility buffer.
