Secondary oil recovery method using n-sulfohydrocarbon-substituted acrylamide polymers as viscosity increasing agents

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7215967

Polymers of N-sulfohydrocarbon-substituted acrylamides such as 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid are useful for controlling the viscosity of aqueous media used in waterflooding operations for secondary petroleum recovery. The preferred polymers are homopolymers and copolymers with acrylic acid or acrylamides. Eleven examples illustrating the preparation of the polymers are given. Tables of viscosities and relative resistance to viscosity loss in the presence of sodium chloride are given for a number of polymers. The mobility, effective viscosity, and resistance factor of several polymers at a concentration of 700 ppm is shown in a table.
