Coal is abundant in the Northern Great Plains, but sources of substantial water supplies are limited. There are some that could supply Montana, Wyoming and N. Dakota, primarily in the Upper Missouri River Basin. Locations, capacities and streamflow of possible sources are examined. The US Bureau of Reclamation has studied possible routes and costs of water conveyance. Energy companies hold options on some stored waters. Ground water from the Madison Formation deep beneath the Fort Union-Powder Basin Coal Region is possible as an alternative water source.
