Allah's oil: Mideast petroleum
The discovery of oil and bringing in the first gusher in 1908 on Islamic lands are described. Oil seeps had been known in the Middle East since ancient times, but little use was made of them. Then the coming of the internal combustion engine made oil valuable, and Eruopean nations began to swarm into the area, probing for the precious substance. Immense sums were spent in oil exploration, and one by one strikes were made and huge companies formed. Helpless under the domination of these monster companies, which were backed up by their oil-hungry governments back home, the lands of the Near East seethed with international intrigue, secret dealings, power struggles, quarrels between allies over oil spoils, and out-and-out petroleum wars. At last, in the wake of the Second World War, which left the European Big Powers exhausted and bankrupt, these Islamic peoples began to stir with nationalistic fervor and started taking back control of their own oil from foreign hands. Then the 1973 Arab oil embargo showed the Western world the importance of petroleum. The harsh facts of the undesirable relationship between the Middle East and the Western world and the political and economic impact its oil is having on the entire world are followed in the book.
