Ammonia as a sintering aid for UO/sub 2/

Ammonia is a sintering aid for UO/sub 2/ pellets. The enhancement in densification using NH/sub 3/ atmospheres includes a reduction in sintering temperatures and a substantial increase in grain size. A redistribution and increase in size of the porosity occurs. Calcining UO/sub 2/ precursors (such as ammonium diuranate) in NH/sub 3/ results in a more active powder which produces a larger grain size in sintered structures than does calcining in hydrogen. Small additions of ammonium salts also result in similar enhancements in grain size.
