Some topics discussed are as follows: screening programs for symptomatic childhood lead poisoning in urban and rural areas of the United States; elevated blood levels of lead in children living in older, deteriorating housing; sources of lead such as peeling, lead-laden paint, burning lead batteries, and fruit juice stored in improperly glazed earthenware; exposure to lead from automobile exhaust and industrial pollution; relation of blood level of lead to absorption and toxicity; use of erythrocyte protoporphyrin measurements to evaluate children for lead poisoning; and learning and behavioral disturbances following exposure to lead during childhood.
