Title: Letter from Europe: oil business expands; drills go deeper

Journal Article · · Energy (Stamford, Conn.); (United States)
OSTI ID:7210908

A view of the energy picture as seen from England indicates a great deal of drilling activity is taking place in the North Sea, where 65 platform rigs are producing enough oil to have reduced England's costs for imported oil. Promising new fields southeast and west of the Shetland Islands have not slowed British efforts to keep reserve levels ahead of depletion rates. The Italians are working at depths of up to 1100 meters to extend their gas fields in the Adriatic and Ionian waters. Australia is undertaking a major oil exploration effort in the west and northwest, with competing efforts of several oil companies. The uranium market is complicated by environmental problems, although Canada may export some to Germany and England on a trial basis. Delegates to the London Local Energy Center Conference felt that the United Kingdom needs a total energy policy. The electricity industry opposes this view. (DCK)
