The direct interaction between charged adsorbed atoms via the electron gas of the metal substrate is investigated. The effect of the shape of the Fermi surface and the damping of the Friedel oscillations is calculated. It is concluded that the indirect coulomb interaction can affect the structure of adsorbed films. The influence of the superconducting transition in the substrate on the adsorbed film is discussed. 23 refs.
