Status report on high-Btu coal gasification

Journal Article · · Am. Gas Assoc. Mon.; (United States)

The severe winter of 1976 may motivate the country to augment natural gas production with a commitment to coal gasification. A proven technology, coal gasification is receiving renewed interest as petroleum and natural gas reserves face depletion. High-Btu gas will be produced in 15 proposed commercial and demonstration plants by the Lurgi Process supplemented by methanation. Regulatory procedures have slowed applications for the first three projects, making financing uncertain. Federal loan guarantees are needed to provide impetus. Research programs have focused on cost reduction and development of systems able to handle a variety of coals. Joint ERDA and American Gas Association projects include the Carbon Dioxide Acceptor, Bigas, Hygas, and Synthane. ERDA budgeting and the development status of these processes are listed.
