A process is described for treating shale and like materials in a finely divided or granular condition which comprises injecting it with superheated steam under pressure into an expansion chamber. The material, while being thus injected and while in mass in the chamber, is subjected to a further treatment with superheated steam which acts on the finely divided material while entering and through the granular mass in the chamber. The resulting vapors are continuously condensed and the barren solids are continuously withdrawn.
