A shale retort is described comprising an enclosed heated shale receiving bed, means for depositing shale centrally of the bed, a large horizontally disposed wheel above the receiving bed having spokes of a configuration to cause shale to be distributed from the central portion of the bed to the marginal portion, and means adapted to successively scrape the spokes of the wheel.
