Gas distributors, fearful of cutoffs, seek own supplies. [Exploring for and producing own gas]

Natural gas customers whose distributors have their own exploration and production programs will have a more secure and less expensive fuel supply than those who must turn to synthetic or imported liquefied gases in the event of curtailments. Joint ventures have begun, for example, between utilities and exploration companies in New Jersey and other states because of the difficulty in buying interstate gas. Preparation for offshore drilling operations is the justification several New England utilities offer for their exploration programs coordinated by the development company Algonquin Energy Inc. Exploration efforts are also underway on the Gulf Coast. Lower prices are expected to result from stable supplies and the opportunity for developing local, less costly investment capital. This is the second installment of a three part survey (by Energy User News) of gas utilities and pipeline companies that are exploring for and producing their own gas.
