System 21 (originally called Project 21) is an innovative transit design that utilizes a single triangular guideway beam to support cars traveling in both directions on opposite sides of the guideway. This configuration has distinct advantages in urban space savings, reduced guideway costs, and compact station layouts. The System 21 car is supported at each end on a single-wheel ``truck``, and by an upper suspension and ``outrigger`` with four pairs of rollers. The outrigger therefore carries a tension load preventing the car from overturning, while the truck wheel carries the car weight and moment-induced compressive loading. The structural integrity of the outrigger is a key to the operating safety of the System 21 vehicle. It was the purpose, therefore, of this preliminary analysis to assess the integrity of the outrigger design, based on the current level of design detail, and to define those specific areas of the design that will require a more detailed analysis and qualification testing. 15 figs., 3 tabs.
