Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is celebrating its fifteenth year in the U.S. motor fuel pool. Originally used as an octane enhancer to reduce the effects of lead phasedown. MTBE's new growth is that of a clean burning fuel additive to assist refiners in meeting the oxygenated fuel and reformulated gasoline (RFG) requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1990. The transition from octane enhancer to oxygenate could increase U.S. demand to nearly 500,000 b/d by the year 1998.
