Reaching into the 21st century: An outlook on automotive fuels and lubricants

In response to competitive, economic, political and environmental pressures, and to meet the constantly increasing needs of the motoring public, automotive fuels and lubricants will have to change as the world moves into the 21st Century. The changes have to comprehend the fact that the world is [open quotes]shrinking[close quotes] and the automotive market is global. This will not only impact automotive products and technology, but also the fuels and lubricants used, and it will lead to a need for worldwide specifications. The outlook for conventional and alternative automotive fuels and lubricants is described, and the results from the Auto/Oil Air Quality Improvement Program are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on gasoline from petroleum because it will continue to be the world's primary automotive fuel for well into the 21st Century.
