A general procedure is presented by which representations are constructed for an SU({ital n}){sub {ital k}} Wess-Zumino-Witten model in the free-field realization. In particular, it is the purpose of this paper to show how proper {ital conjugate} vertex operators are constructed. Such operators are of prime importance in the Coulomb-gas approach where correlation functions are calculable. The bosonization is shown to be crucial in this formalism. An intriguing relation is clarified between screening currents, conjugate identity operators, and those for primary states. The representations of SU(2){sub {ital k}} and SU(3){sub {ital k}} models are studied in detail. Correlation functions are also discussed briefly.
