This paper reports on a demand for integrated petroleum refinery information systems which has been increasing over the past five years in response to the competitive environment in the refining business. It is only in the past five years that software technology has made these systems feasible. But as advances are made in software technology and the open systems revolution take hold, how will future refinery information systems evolve An existing integrated refinery information system will be examined followed by how a future refinery system might be built.
