Distillation, destructive

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7204723
The disclosure relates to the extraction of oil and other hydrocarbons, and to the production of coke, charcoal, and gas, by passing heated gases over coals, shale, or other bituminous substances. The gases employed are preferably the heated products of combustion, which may be prepared by conducting air over a fire so arranged that all the atmospheric oxygen introduced shall be combined with carbon. For instance, a blast of air may be driven from an air pump over a coke fire, and the products of combustion may be led into the top of a chamber containing the bituminous substance so that the distillation proceeds downwards. The products of distillation together with the heated products of combustion pass by suitable outlets to the condensers. In applying the invention for the extraction of oil, the chamber is preferably open at the lower end and sealed in a bath of water. Thus the exhausted shale and c. may be withdrawn as it descends into the water bath, and fresh charges added at the top. For making coke, characoal, and gas the chamber is preferably closed at the lower end. The processes of oil, gas, and coke making may be carried on continuously in one operation.
