An apparatus for extracting oil from shale is described comprising a horizontal retort, a furnace beneath one end of the retort, and a series of connected flues extending beneath the retort from the furnace to a smoke-vent. Air-valves are provided in the flues along with a revolving conveyor to move the shale from the cooler to the hotter end of the retort and a steam-jet to drive the vapors from the hotter end toward and out through a vent in the cooler end of the retort.
