Moessbauer spectroscopy has been used to show that traces of iron added to the vapor of ZrCl/sub 4/ in the form of FeCl/sub 3/ are trapped mainly in the form of FeCl/sub 2/ on condensation from the flowing helium. Additional evidence for the iron entering the solid only in one form is provided by the constancy of the trapping factor lambda as the initial supersaturation or minor-component content is varied, as well as by the constancy of lambda in the parts of the thermostatic tube. Similarly, constant lambda occur when traces of niobium enter solid ZrCl/sub 4/ from NbOCl/sub 3/ added to the vapor (lambda has been determined with /sub 55/Fe and /sub 95/Nb). Traces of niobium enter ZrCl/sub 4/ in a single form, most probably NbCl/sub 5/, which is formed by reaction between NbOCl/sub 3/ and ZrCl/sub 4/ at elevated temperatures.
