Method and apparatus for removing sulfur dioxide from a gas mixture, particularly from combustion gases are described. The gases are scrubbed with an aqueous scrubbing liquid containing dissolved therein an inorganic reactant capable of forming a sulfite salt with the sulfur dioxide and an oxidization catalyst capable of oxidizing the sulfite salt to the corresponding sulfate salt during the scrubbing process. If the gas mixture does not contain sufficient oxygen, then air may be added during scrubbing.
