Flory-Stockmayer theory can quantitatively reproduce the molecular size distributions of acyclic species observed during the early stages of silica sol-gel polymerization under acidic and basic conditions. Under acidic conditions, a good description is obtained only if predominantly linear polymerization is assumed. Under basic conditions, however, experimental size distributions are best described by a branched polymerization process.
