The characteristics of the processes of radiolysis of anionic impurity defects and of formation of F/sup +//sub 2/ centers in LiF and NaF crystals have been studied. It was found that a necessary condition for the formation of stabilized O/sup - -/F/sup +//sub 2/ centers is the presence in the crystals of two types of impurities: OH/sup -/ ions and oxygen. Two steps were observed in the process of formation of O/sup - -/F/sup +//sub 2/ centers: a fast step involving diffusion of thermally unstable F/sup +//sub 2/ centers, and a slow step involving diffusion of single O/sup - -/V/sup +//sub a/ dipoles. The mechanisms of formation of O/sup - -/F/sup +//sub 2/ centers in both steps are discussed. It was found that in LiF:O, OH and NaF:O, OH, radiochemical transformations of impurity defects take place which do not occur in crystals containing one of the impurities. Such reactions are manifested in the formation of O/sub m/H/sub n/ groups. A mechanism of their formation is proposed.
