By placing Unit 1 of the Navajo Generating Station on line as a coal-fired base-load plant, this coal-fired unit provides cost savings of approximately $330,000 per day over the cost of generating the same power by means of modern oil-fired generating units. This savings is due entirely to the differential cost of the fuel. Not to be overlooked in the sudden spurt in fuel costs is their effect when considered in conjunction with the national trend toward large supercritical boiler installations which has taken place over the past several years. The thermal efficiency of the supercritical design presents a most attractive if not compelling economic appeal; but conversely, its higher operating pressures invite particular concern in regard to the reliability and availability of the design.
