Requirements for gas-insulated equipment through 1980

Conference · · Proc. Am. Power Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7200212

In the area of gas-insulated transmission equipment, which includes breakers, substations, and transmission lines, we can project developments to 1980 and beyond fairly well from presently available apparatus ratings and design approaches being considered. In this paper consideration will include voltage ratings from 115 kV to UHV levels where, except for certain oil breaker ratings, SF/sub 6/ gas is the universally accepted insulation medium. Since the mid-1950s this gas has been used experimentally in several power transformers and commercially in breakers covering a wide range of voltage and short-circuit interrupting ratings. Today circuit breakers are in service at voltages up to 800 kV, short-circuit interrupting current ratings of 63 kA, and continuous currents of 4000 amperes.
