Flat alkaline cell construction and method for assembling the same
A flat alkaline cell is described which comprises an electrode assembly including at least a pair of flat electrode elements of opposite polarity and a porous separator containing the alkaline electrolyte interposed between and in contact with the pair of electrode elements. The electrode assembly is enclosed within a sealed, liquid-impervious plastic film envelope having an opening in one wall thereof and wherein flat internal and external current collectors are disposed adjacent to the inner and outer sides of the wall, respectively, overlying the opening. The collectors are tightly adhered to the respective sides of the wall by thin layers of an adhesive sealant which is non-wettable by the alkaline electrolyte. Means are provided for making electrical connection between the current collectors through the opening in the wall. Also disclosed is a method for assembling the flat cell wherein a composite collector-wall member is formed prior to completion of the sealed envelope. 5 figures. (auth)
