The rate of the azobisisobutyronitrile-initiated chlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of o-dichlorobenzene obeys a complex equation of fractional orders in 1,2-dichloroethane, o-dichlorobenzene, and the initiator. The obtained data are interpreted in terms of a mechanism involving chlorine atoms or their ..pi.. complexes with the aromatic molecules ArH ..-->.. Cl as chain transfer agents. On the basis of the parameters of the kinetic equation and known data on the rate constants of chain initiation and termination reactions an estimate is given of the rate constants for the abstraction of hydrogen from 1,2-dichloroethane by the C/sub 6/H/sub 4/Cl/sub 2/ ..-->.. Cl complexes (0.67 x 10/sup 5/ liter/mole x sec) and the ratio of the rate constants for the formation of the C/sub 6/H/sub 4/Cl/sub 2/ ..-->.. Cl complexes and the abstraction of hydrogen from 1,2-dichloroethane by the chlorine atoms (15.2).
