Historical blast furnace operating data at Warren Consolidated Industries, Inc. were analyzed to serve as a baseline for future high-rate injection experiments. Data on furnace performance were examined for consistency, and rationalized material balance data were used as inputs to a blast furnace energy balance model. The model was used to analyze furnace performance and interpret the effects of injecting natural gas as a supplemental fuel. Data indicate the potential to achieve increased productivity and reduced cost for the integrated steelmaker through the use of higher rates of natural gas plus oxygen injection in the blast furnace. Results show a replacement ratio of up to 1.8 pounds of coke per ton of hot metal (lbs/THM). The furnace was operated for long periods of time at natural gas levels of about 150 lbs/THM with no indication of any operating problems, and the results of the energy balance analysis suggested that still higher rates are feasible. Field data indicate the need to conduct additional controlled experiments to confirm and further explore affects on productivity, coke replacement ratio, and operations from gas injection rates up to 250 lbs/THM.
